Analyte

Name of the analyte requiring testing as per the corresponding Codex Alimentarius standard, where relevant.

Codex Reference

Indicates the Codex Alimentarius standard(s) applicable to the commodity.

Method

Name of the method used to test the corresponding provision.

Organization responsible for the method.

Description

Abbreviation of the instrumental technique prescribed by the method.

CXS 234-1999

Indicates whether the method is listed in Codex Standard on Recommended Methods of Analysis and Sampling.

Type

Type of the method, as listed in the Codex Standard on Recommended Methods of Analysis and Sampling:

Type I – A method which determines a value that can only be arrived in terms of the method per se and serves by definition as the only method for establishing the accepted value of the item measured.

Type II – A Type II method is the one designated reference method where Type I methods do not apply. It should be selected from Type III methods (as defined below). It should be recommended for use in cases of dispute and for calibration purposes.

Type III - A Type III method is one which meets the criteria required by the Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling for methods that may be used for control, inspection, or regulatory purposes.

Type IV – A Type IV method is a method which has been used traditionally or else has been recently introduced but for which the criteria required for acceptance by the Committee on Methods of Analysis and Sampling have not yet been determined

Infant formula (IF)

Infant formula means a breastmilk substitute specially manufactured to satisfy, by itself, the nutritional requirements of infants during the first months of life up to the introduction of appropriate complementary feeding.

Follow-up formula for older infants (FUF)

Follow-up formula for older infants means a product, manufactured for use as a breastmilk-substitute, as a liquid part of a diet for older infants when progressively diversified complementary feeding is introduced.

Product for Young Children

Product for young children means a product manufactured for use as a liquid part of the diversified diet of young children (CXS 156-1987).

Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP)

Foods for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) are a category of foods for special dietary uses which are specially processed or formulated and presented for the dietary management of patients and may be used only under medical supervision. They are intended for the exclusive or partial feeding of patients with limited or impaired capacity to take, digest, absorb or metabolize ordinary foodstuffs or certain nutrients contained therein, or who have other special medically-determined nutrient requirements, whose dietary management cannot be achieved only by modification of the normal diet, by other foods for special dietary uses, or by a combination of the two (CXS 180-1991).

Formula for Special Medical Purposes Intended for Infants

Formula for special medical purposes intended for infants means a substitute for human milk or infant formula that are specially manufactured to satisfy, by itself, the special nutritional requirements of infants with specific disorders, diseases or medical conditions during the first months of life up to the introduction of appropriate complementary feeding (CXS 72-1981).
